The Internal Superhero: The Secret Strength of Your Immune System
We all know that when winter strikes, it often comes with colds and flu and keeping your family healthy throughout the season can be a challenge. While there is no substitute for a healthy diet, regular exercise, rest and hydration, it can be helpful to supplement to support your immune system.
From birth, our bodies are constantly exposed to germs 1. To fight off harmful germs, the immune system has different ways of protecting the body. This includes physical and chemical barriers, special cells, and antibodies that target the germs. It also helps fix damage caused by things like pollution and natural toxins found in food 1. In short, the body’s first line of defence against germs or harmful substances is the innate immune system 1.
Every part of the immune system depends on certain vitamins and minerals for their complementary roles 1. This was first noticed with vitamin C, when a lack of it caused scurvy 1. Fun fact: in one of the earliest clinical trials done in 1753, James Lind found that sailors who ate citrus fruits recovered much better from scurvy than those who didn’t 1.
Since then, it’s been shown that a range of micronutrients are essential for the immune system, working together to support the body’s ability to fight off infections 1.
The body’s first line of defence includes the skin and inner linings, which act as barriers to things like bacteria, viruses, dust and harmful chemicals. These barriers need to stay strong to work properly and micronutrients help keep them in good condition 1.
Every part of the immune system relies on certain vitamins and minerals working together to do their job properly. Nutrients like zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin D help keep the skin and the body’s inner linings (like those in the nose, lungs, and gut) healthy 1. These act as the body’s first line of defence, helping to block germs from entering and causing illness 1.
Looking after your family’s health during the colder months can feel like a constant effort, especially with so many seasonal bugs going around. While no single solution can prevent illness, making sure your body is well supported through good daily habits and the right nutrients can make a meaningful difference. By focusing on overall wellness and giving your body what it needs, you can feel more prepared to take on the challenges that winter brings with the best defence you never knew you had.
